Indie developer, a career worth trying?

Hey devs,

I’m writing this message to seek some help about pursuing a career as a indie dev. Comments are much appreciated.

To give some context, I am in my mid 20s, I am a web developer, working for a known clothing brand. The team is great, the salary is really good, and the project is ok. Some time ago I started looking for ways of earning something on the side, and I found video games as the perfect option.

I’ve always been an artistic person, as I started to draw and paint from a very early age, and with my experience on programming, video games seems like the natural result of mixing both things. And it could be a way of expressing myself artistically through my programming skills.

I have watched some youtube game developers close to where I live, make around 100k euros. Definitively not a hit, but really good though. Some months ago I made the decision and started to make a game. I have pivoted a few times, each time going for a smaller game.

My goal is to leave my job and focus on making games solely. I won’t leave my job unless I make a game that gives me enough to do so. But I am really questioning if that would ever be the case.

I am putting a lot of effort in making this game, as every other indie does. I don’t go out, I stay until late, I go less to the gym, etc. But also I know that the bast majority of indies fail, and therefore I am asking my self if all this effort is worth it or not.

And that is why I need your help. Do you think this is worth the try? Is it possible to make a decent living without making any hit? Would I be in a worse condition than having a regular job? Should I quit?

TLDR: I want to leave my job to pursue a indie dev career, but I seriously doubt if it would be worth it.

  1. Wow, thanks for sharing your history, definitively it sound like roller coaster.

Unfortunately don´t have much to show right now. I just finished working on some 3d camera animations. I have a 3d model of the scene made, but the current state is closer to a 3d render than a game. I am working on having something more to show, but it will take me a couple weeks at least.

Wish you the best on this journey m8.
